Some Interesting Facts About South Easton:
South Easton started its history as the frontier of the Taunton North Purchase and was the hunting, fishing and lumbering preserve of early Taunton settlers. South Easton is a pretty, pleasant suburban community now. Colonists settled in about 1695 and formal establishment of South Easton was in 1725 and led to a controversy over the location of the South Easton meeting house, which split the early community.

South Easton's industrial history begins with the discovery of bog iron, which made South Easton part of an 18th century iron producing location in southwestern Massachusetts. Commercial steel first made in the colonies was said to have been made in South Easton and was apparently used for muskets. The Ames Shovel Company was established in South Easton in 1803, and became known throughout the nation as having provided the shovels which laid the Union Pacific Railroad and helped open the west. The shovel production of the Ames plant was worth $1.5 million in 1875. The Ames company shaped South Easton's economy and also its architecture and geography. In the late 19th century, the Ames family donated several landmark buildings to the town of Easton and its smaller counterparts. This benevolent contribution provided architectural significance since the nationally known architect H.H. Richardson designed Oakes Ames Memorial Hall, the library and the Old Colony Railroad building which now houses the Easton Historical Society, in the impressive Romanesque style. The communities of Easton have carefully preserved these buildings, as part of the proud heritage of the town. In addition, Ames family estates effectively maintained large tracts of open space in the Easton environs, including South Easton.

Through most of its history, South Easton has had an industrial base that included the production of the Morse automobile between 1902 and 1914, cotton mills, piano casing and piano machinery shops, and the spring which supplied the oldest carbonated beverage company in the country. South Easton remains largely rural in feeling. Suburban development has brought in a significant number of new residents.

Located in Southeastern Massachusetts, South Easton is bordered by Sharon and Stoughton on the north; Brockton and West Bridgewater on the east; Raynham, Taunton, and Norton on the south and southwest; and Mansfield on the west. South Easton is located 4 miles west of Brockton, 24 miles south of Boston, and 201 miles from New York City.
