Some Interesting Facts About South Dartmouth:
As a portion of Dartmouth, the section of South Dartmouth is also unusual in exemplifying from its history the same tension between the Calvinist Puritans and those who wanted to worship in their own way.

It was 1652, when Massasoit, Chief Sachem of the Wampanoag Tribe, sold the land now known as South Dartmouth to leaders of the Plymouth Colony, including Miles Standish, John Alden, and Governor William Bradford. The Plymouth Colony Elders then sold the South Dartmouth land off in parcels, primarily to religious dissidents such as Quakers and Baptists, who sought protection from the religious persecutions being enacted both by the Massachusetts Bay and Plymouth Bay Colonies. South Dartmouth, named after the British port of Dartmouth, was incorporated in 1664. South Dartmouth refused consistently to pay the "minister's tax", which was levied on all communities to support Puritan clergy.

South Dartmouth was growing fast, bringing in those who were frustrated with the establishment and many others who were experienced working in fishing agriculture, or saltmaking, including large numbers of Portuguese immigrants.

South Dartmouth, although remaining a rural agricultural community through much of its history, grew into a summer residential and resort area in the 19th century. Wealthy and upper crust city residents from New Bedford built and purchased vacation homes in and around the Dartmouth area. South Dartmouth is now mostly considered a suburban bedroom community. There remains however, a strong vacation component, a wide diversity in religious beliefs and plenty of farming in South Dartmouth still to this day. Areas of South Dartmouth still have strong colonial, Federal and Greek revival architecture. South Dartmouth residents are proud that the past and present are able to co-exist: the past in its scenic rural roads, villages, farms and houses of worship, and the present with its emerging industrial policies, the North Dartmouth Mall and the town's overall commercial development.

Located in Southeastern Massachusetts, South Dartmouth and it's parent town of Dartmouth is bordered by Westport on the west, Fall River on the north, and New Bedford and Buzzards Bay on the east and south. From the intersection of Route #6 and #177 in the Westport Mills section, South Dartmouth is 6 miles west of New Bedford, 6 miles south of Fall River, 53 miles south of Boston, and about 202 miles from New York City.
